Mt Barker Preview - Thursday December 31st

With the third meeting in the district in fourteen days, fields for the Mt Barker New Years Eve meeting have been stretched with some small fields. Fortunately all three races with small fields are great betting races, with many winning chances.

Star Buck narrowly beaten by Zarisk can go one better on Thursday

Race One: Billyaintsilly has been racing solidly but on form a place chance looks best in this field. Jolanta Star goes back in class and up in weight, but was a very good run last start. Port Regis resumes after good form in the North West over the winter. Zoom Star has always shown ability and was an impressive winner at Narrogin first up in milder company. Troubled Smile was a fair effort at Bunbury first up and previous form was good.

Race Two: Tidal Storm returned to best form last start over 1300m with a win. Likes this trip. Lovely Lucy battled on fairly over 1300m first up and will strip much fitter here. Pay to forget Watson’s Bay’s last run in the City on go on excellent Great Southern form. Western Zed resumes here and has fair form this company. Week Bix placed at two runs back latest when leading over 1300m. Suited here.

Race Three: Versaint resumes after good Mid Week City form through the winter. Pwakkers Back has struggled since winning at Narrogin. Blazing Icon battled on well after a hard run first up and suited here. Speedy Bohemian resumes here and races well fresh. Recent Trial winner. Marshall Jensen was not far away at second run back in slightly milder company. Sister Golden Hair has ability but not sighted first up and can do better.

Race Four: Dinglish placed at last two and close to a win, but drawn wide here. Hussonace was a good effort at first WA start when placed here, and a likely improver. Rivotio yet to be placed in five starts, but form has been fair in stronger company. Street Darling placed at debut but form only moderate at next six starts. Good effort when placed in recent trial. Elleofagale improved effort at Narrogin last start. Granblurr was a good effort at debut when placed here at this distance.

Race Five: Magic Master placed at three of eleven starts, disappointing at latest run Narrogin. Rambler good efforts at two runs back from spell, close to a win. Lizard Drinking will improve on first up fourth this track and distance at second race start. Halo Park resumed with very good second here when running on. Good claims on that effort. Alms placed at Pinjarra three runs back, and form since only fair in stronger company. Montclar Miss was placed at Bunbury at third race start. Likely improver. Jolanta Sky makes debut and looked impressive with recent trail win.

Race Six: Daintysfury led and broke through for Maiden win last start. This is harder here. Stockman’s Dream beaten a whisker here last start and has strong prospects. City of Subiaco won Narrogin three starts back and good effort their last start when placed. Trimconnection was not far away first up this track, and should improve here. Ridgewood Manna placed here two starts back and pay to forget last run.

Race Seven: Star Buck narrowly beaten here first up and on that effort hard to beat. Why So Blue had no luck when placed here first up, but drawn a shade wide. King’s Tribute, very good effort here first up when not beaten far. The Keillor Kid followed moderate form with win at long odds here. Need to reproduce that effort again. Carry The Banner broke through for first win here last start. Goes up in class.

Albany Review - Saturday December 26th

The Boxing Day meeting looked like it was turning into Jockey Link Robertsons personal nightmare, before redemption in the last. Robertson who had the pick of some good rides, went down on the first two favourites, when they had no answer when challenged, then saw one of his regular rides The Mighty Boosh win, before he steered home Royalistic to a good win in the final event.

Myth N Mystery (Kyra Yuill)

Race One: Small fields seem to at times bring the undoing of favourites and this race was no exception with the well backed Timely Reign far too good for the favourite Sir Clase, with Ruberian a distant third.

Race Two: Jockey Noel Rudland booted home an early double when Jazzy Saint came away to win well for new trainer Holly Elmis. Honest Pulashaky again finished in the money with Shovely finishing well to just get third from favourite Laurie’s Dream who was under pressure shortly after straightening.

Race Three: With a solid pace in front, the backmarkers got home late with Gotanygoss just getting the verdict over Albanyorascot (who was slow away) after both came from the rear on the turn.  Glowing Vain also came from well back along the inside to grab third. Lukaston battled on well to finish fourth. Well backed favourite Born To Be Bad was caught wide and had a torrid run.

Race Four: Well backed favourite Myth N Mystery scored an easy win in a moderate field over Irish Target who ran on nicely, with Mctease an improved effort finishing third.

Punk'd (Kelly Davison)

Race Five: Punk’d who put the writing on the wall last start, proved too good with a solid win over the ever consistent Saramento. Attadale carrying top weight of 60kg ran his best race for sometime back third. Promising youngster Evil Force settled well but was under pressure shortly after straightening and plugged away to run fourth.

Race Six: The Mighty Boosh broke a long run of outs when apprentice Yannick Valenti rode a copybook race to get the nine year old home. Sir Onan finished on well to grab second over Megablitz who battled away. Commandeer looked to have every chance and was just behind the placegetters. In form Radio Pleasure was under pressure after straightening and was one of the first to look beaten.

Race Seven: Royalistic won the last in a canter after quickly rounding up the leaders 200m out and holding Trochee at bay to the line. Maiden Jordi set a good pace in front and did well to hold on for third. Chaddie made ground to be a fair fourth, with Canny Besain missing the money after having a good run.

Esperance Review Saturday December 26th

Hot conditions greeted patrons at the Esperance Bay Turf Club on Boxing Day. It was great to see a third dividend in all races and the Club would be tickled pink with the large turnout.
The Pink Lake Butcher’s Handicap kicked things off and former leading rider Rod Kirkup trained the first winner. Moss Street was ridden forward by Damian Miller and after reeling in the runaway Innocent Bystander he was able to hold off a late challenge from favourite Donargy. Innocent Bystander is prepared by Debbie Warnes and after zooming to a six length lead in the middle stages battled on courageously to hold a placing. She will strip a lot fitter second up and will take serious running down.

Race Two was the Rob Dutton Spreading Handicap and apprentice Andrew Castle steered home Just Sue to defeat pace maker Miss Alonso. Miss Alonso kicked away at the top of the straight but Just Sue was chiming in quickly and maintained her superior momentum all the way to the post. The margin was a neck and two lengths away third was Lady Berthe. Twice The Speed was a half head away in fourth.

The third was a Maiden sponsored by the Bay Automotive Group. The Key Cutter, who had started at the first two meetings for two thirds settled in a prominent spot before booting clear at the 200m mark and winning by half a length. Outside Influence was gallant in defeat and Royal Wing caught the eye with a fast finishing third.

The Dr. Graham Jacobs MLA Handicap was run over 1200m and at a sizzling tempo. Tashi Delek burst out of the gates and set a brisk speed but wilted late to finish toward the rear. San Supremo came with a well timed run to win by over a length for 3kg claiming apprentice Kevin Bohorun. It was Bohorun’s first visit to the EBTC and it’s one he will never forget. Mr Magnificent finished second and made it five minor placings on the trot. Racoff was granted third position narrowly ahead of the winner’s stablemate Damon’s Halo.

The feature was the Esperance Freight Lines Sprint (1300m) and Burnzy, a newcomer to the Esperance track reigned supreme for Helen Harding. He began swiftly and took the lead at the 300m mark before holding off the fast finish of Expedition. King Of The Stalls looked ominous at the 450m mark but could only manage a third. He’s Smokin’ ran an improved fourth and looks to be working back into form.

The Menace and Time Star were two important scratchings from the Bay Automotive Group Handicap and the field size was reduced to eight. Ron’s Gem assumed the leading role shortly after the start for Nicole Hopwood and proceeded to make ‘every post a winner’, scoring by over a length in 1.18.07. Marvon Sher battled on well for second ahead of the well commissioned Stormy Quest. Both Brendan Corver and Helen Harding ended the afternoon with training doubles along with senior rider Damian Miller. The next meeting scheduled is this Saturday (January 2) with the first event set down for approximately 2pm.

Horses to follow ; Donargy, Miss Alonso, Royal Wing, Racoff, He’s Smokin’ and Ron’s Gem.

Albany Preview - December 26th (CR)

Albanys biggest race day, bar Albany Cup day comes up on Boxing Day with a huge crowd expected on course in the festive spirit. An even seven race card is set down with some open races and a couple of races where on paper the winner looks to stand out. The meeting has TAB coverage but not Sky Channel.

Esperance Preview at http://greatsouthernracing.blogspot.com/2009/12/esperance-preview-saturday-december_23.html

Race One: Only a small field and Sir Clase looks a class above his opponents. Got home nicely over 1300m after a let up and distance here suits. Weekly Express untried this trip and latest runs have been disappointing. Belarus has not won for sometime, but much better effort last start. Ruberian has struggled in weaker company but likes this trip. Timely Reign moderate form at three runs back but better suited this journey.

Race Two: Lauries Dream has been knocking on the door, this trip will suit after five placings in eleven starts. Pulashaky very consistent this company and step up to 1500m will be to advantage. NJazzy Saint was a good effort first up at Mt Barker and can continue to improve. Disrupt not far away first up at Mt barker and has claims. Miss Strickland never likely at Mt Barker for new trainer but much better suited this trip. Competitive Street placed last two at Esperance and steps up 400m in distance here. Placed five of nine starts.

Race Three: Albanyorascot resumes here, has good first up record and placed three of seven starts.  Born To Be Bad yet to be placed in eight starts but good effort Pinjarra last start. Glowing Vain never stied first up , but previous form this company fair. Gotanygoss placed at Esperance two starts back this distance. Hope To Speed slow away at Mt Barker made some ground in the straight. Royal Escapade placed at Geraldton three runs back overall form is moderate. It’ll Be Sweet much better effort at Esperance last start. Nicely drawn here.

Race Four: Mctease won 1500m Maiden last season, second up here but may be a bit short. Irish Target followed good first up run with moderate effort Mt Barker. Back in distance here may not suit. Russian To Win form since Mt Barker placing not encouraging, but this a very weak field. Myth N Mystery had no luck first up at Mt Barker and will prove hard to beat here.

Race Five: Attadale is back in class but up in weight. Has not won for sometime but has prospects. Billyaintsilly followed win with distant placing at Mt Barker. Similar claims again. Evil Force had no luck last start when raced wide after good win at previous start. Up a grade but a promising type. Punk’d produced best run in WA last start and is close to a win. Saramento was a good effort first up at Mt Barker. Up in class but very consistent type. Cummings placed here two runs back then not disgraced in strong field Esperance last outing. Look Here Trousers unplaced after good run at Albany two runs back. Hard to follow.

Race Six: Radio Pleasure has been in great form this season and very good winner Mt Barker last start. This trip should suit even better. Sir Onan yet to show up in three runs back, but drops in class here. About Class resumes after North West campaign. Won a couple here last season. Racso had hard run first up then good effort at Mt Barker last outing. All Spots terrorized in front last start and battled on well, had no luck at previous run when saddle slipped. Capable but drawn wide. Our Calendar Girl not sighted last start but has been looking for ground. Commandeer led and a fought on well last start. Suited here. Megablitz was a very good effort first up. Need to reproduce that run again. The Mighty Boosh is never far away but finds winning very hard.

Race Seven: Alsaah Warrior resumes here after winning at 1600m last season. Hard task first up. Late Change yet to show up this campaign and would need to get back to past form. Royalistic has shown fair form at three runs back and this trip will suit better. Trochee very good run two starts back, then caught wide last start. Better placed here. Canny Besain no luck with barriers since winning first up. Capable of improving here. Chaddie not far away at last few and place claims here. Disco reveler raced wide last start and battled on well. Need to reproduce that effort.  Raunchy Business won four starts back, this trip will suit.

Esperance Preview - Saturday December 26th (CRX)

The six race card commences at 2:07pm and is a TAB meeting. The smallest field size is eight and the TAB betting code will be CRX. The Esperance meeting will be covered on Racing Radio along with the Ascot and Albany meetings. Good fields are the order of the day with prizemoney topping the meeting at Albany. Last season’s leading hoop Willie Arnold has a great book of rides and should taste plenty of success.

Albany Preview at http://greatsouthernracing.blogspot.com/2009/12/albany-preview-december-26th-cr.html

The opening race is the Pink Lake Butchers Handicap over 1100m. Donargy has won at the first two meetings and looks set to notch up a hat-trick despite rising to 58.5kg. Bangadang Jack impressed a few months ago when victorious at Carnarvon and he should strip a lot fitter. Dancing Granada hasn’t been far away against a higher grade of opposition and Keys To Windsor performed well at Esperance last season. Innocent Bystander is a speedy type who won at the Esperance circuit last season and Kiryn Waldeck has been granted the mount. The alotted 54kg should give the pair a great chance of stealing the race at each way odds.

The Rob Dutton Spreading Handicap (1400m) on paper looks to be between the Brendan Corver trained mares Just Sue and Lady Berthe. Both possess strong finishing bursts and with luck in running should be in the finish. Twice The Speed has finished just behind the placegetters at her last couple and Miss Alonso wasn’t far away last start either. Brave Critic is the other that should be considered, he broke his maiden status at the last meeting and looks to have matured sharply since last season.

Seventeen horses accepted for the Bay Automotive Group Maiden but there will be at least three scratchings with fourteen the maximum amount of starters allowed to race over 1200m. The Key Cutter is a great ride for Lisa Bivemark and Outside Influence is another with solid current form to her name. There are a host of other chances and Quaddie investors may want to play it ‘wide’ given the size of the field and the question marks hovering over a lot of the newcomers.

The Dr. Graham Jacobs MLA Handicap sees the clash of speedy front-runners Tashi Delek and Racoff. Mr Magnificent was placed at Esperance twice before running third at Narrogin last Saturday and he should receive a lovely run behind the ‘dragsters’ from barrier two. Kimberleys, Damon’s Halo and San Supremo all loom as winning dangers.

The Esperance Freight Lines Sprint is wide open. Last meeting’s Open Sprint winner King Of The Stalls looks hard to hold out and newcomers Aelstreet and Burnzy have enjoyed plenty of success early in their careers. He’s Smokin’ will be a lot fitter along with Expedition and the fleet-footed Jay Dee Rocks. Danish Currency (54.5kg) also gets in well at the weights.

The meeting concludes at 5:25pm with the running of the Bay Automotive Group Handicap. The Menace has drawn ideally (1) and looks to have plenty to offer. Stormy Quest and Time Star both caught the eye last start and Marvon Sher put in a solid run too. Ron’s Gem is also a recent winner but she has drawn the outside gate and will require luck.

Mt Barker Review Thursday December 17th

Between them Trainer Paul Hunter and Jockeys Paul King and Link Robertson had not been in the winners circle too often in the Great Southern this season, but that all changed on Thursday with a red letter day for the Hunter Stable with a treble. King and Robertson both booted home winners for the trainer as did Takahide Ikenushi. King booted home a double also winning on Zarisk, whilst Robertson missed out on a double by the barest margin.

Tidal Storm (Link Robertson)

Race One: Daintysfury was overdue to break her Maiden status and went straight to the front for Jockey Paul King, dashed clear at 200m and then just started to paddle near the line, but held off Halo Park who ran on strongly, but may have ruined his chances by hanging in the straight. Hussonace who was having his first WA start finished off well to run third with Lizard Drinking who loomed on the corner fading to fourth.

Race Two: Lightly raced Carry The Banner broke through at her fifth start with a grinding win over Grandblurr who was a good effort at her race debut, finishing off well late albeit racing a bit greenly. Honest performer Pulashaky battled on well to pick up another check and should win soon over a little more ground. Jazzy Saint ran a fair race as did Flash Gordan who copped a bad check near the line. Mcflirts Delight firmed to favourite, but was caught wide and never flattered.

Race Three: Up and coming Adams Time took a big step up in class but was far too good going away to win over Punk'd who is nearing his best form since coming from Victoria.  Billaintsilly got a squeeze at the start and raced at the back of the field and finished a distant third, without ever looking a winning chance. Spitfighter again let his backers down and has become an expensive betting proposition.

The Keillor Kid (Amy Sandiford) Photos courtesy Grassrootsracingwa

Race Four: In the tightest of finishes that fooled most (and me) outsider The Keillor Kid got up in the last bound for apprentice Amy Sandiford to win by a nose over Stockmans Dream with Blazing Icon inches away third. Been so close Sandiford thought she hadn't won, Link Robertson (Stockmans Dream) thought he had, as the Judges had to blow the picture to 2 pixels to seperate them. Stockmans Dream again jumped awkwardly and had the race won but right on the post. Blazing Icon was an excellent effort first up, and was still in front with 25m to go. There was many good runs also behind the placegetters including, All Spots, Marshall Jensen, Boy Canny Go and Trimconnection finished right on the heels of the placegetters.

Race Five:  Zarisk improved on his first up placing nine days previous with an all the way win for Jockey Paul King over Star Buck who performed well first up and would have won in two more bounds. Last start winner I'm Called Away battled away fairly to run third but never really looked the winner.  Disc Reveller worked hard in running, and did well to hold fourth. Both Irish Target and Jeneviv finished mid field and may be looking for more ground.

Race Six: The favourite Week Bix bounded to the lead from a wide draw and set a solid pace in front, but could not hold out Tidal Storm who was ridden to a nicety by Link Robertson, with Jolanta Star suited by the fast pace and drop in weight running on strongly. Sir Clase and Lovely Lucy were both doing their best work at the finish as was Belarus.

Race Seven: Whilst stablemate and favourite Evil Force was having a torrid run from a wide draw, Jockey Shane Gilchrist had Radio Pleasure in the box seat and dashed away on the corner and came away to win over Mega Blitz who was a good run first up. Evil Force lost no admirers battling on after a hard run to finish third. Racso was a much better effort second up, with Barn Burner and Look Here Trousers looking to have had their chances.

Mt Barker Preview Thursday 17th December.

A seven event card at Mt Barker this Thursday sees a very competitive field line up in the Albany Advertiser Sprint over 1300m. Carbineer heads the weights for astute trainer Max Hockey but will benefit from apprentice Kyra Yuill's claim of 2.0kg and carry 58kg. Week Bix will have his second start back from a spell and regular rider Shaun Meeres replaces Paul King. The Steve Wolfe trained Lovely Lucy resumes from a short let but will have to contend with a wide gate, but has the services of inform Jockey, Shaun McGruddy. Jockey Peter Hall who's last outing in the Great South resulted in three rides for three wins has taken only two mounts, on last start winners Billyaintsilly and Evil Force.

23°C

Race One: Former NSW galloper Via Delfino was unplaced in first two WA starts in the North, resumes here for Esperance trainer Sally Roworth and was placed in recent trial. Dark N Stormy was doing best work at finish when distant third last start and can keep improving. Dan Falbrav yet to be placed in seven starts, but trialled well recentley. Lizzard Drinking not disgraced at only start in city, ran handy trial last week. Byzantimes resumes, Pinjarra placed six starts back, overall form only fair though. Daintysfury showed pace but run down when second last start. Is knocking on the door. Miss Cibola placed twice in five starts, placed at Pinjarra two runs back.

Race Two: Pulashaky consistent this company, good effort last start, but back 200m here may not suit. Jazzy Saint resumes here, placing at Kalgoorlie was only cheque in nine starts. Bonds Lane put in a solid effort here last week when placed and strong prospects here. From The Fire was an improved effort not far away last start, but yet to be placed in five starts. Miss Strickland comes back in distance here on last start but has shown some ability in limited starts. Carry The Banner was a fair effort at fourth race start and ready to start producing good form. Mcflirts Delight has been racing in stronger company and was placed at Pinjarra two starts back. Granblurr makes debut here at the 1300m, and finished on well in a recent trial.

Race Three: Billyaintsilly returned to winners list with all the way win last week. Up a class with big weight again and services of P.Hall. Punk'd not that far away last start and capable of surprising here. Adam's Time unbeaten in two starts and big step in class here, but shows plenty. Dark Thor has not started for over 30 months but won recent 700m trial.  Spitfighter some excuses last start, but would still need to do better after looming up in straight. Blazing Icon is a consistent performer, though does not win many. Won recent Albany trial. Arcade Attraction  was beaten first up by Donargy at Esperance and likely to improve.

Race Four:  All Spots , pay to forget last run from wide draw and go on good first up win at Albany. Marshall Jensen finished mid field first up at Albany, but not beaten by that much. Well Adjusted has not fired in two runs since winning at Mt Barker. Sister Golden Hair suited at this trip and usually sprints well fresh. Stockmans Dream was a good effort first up after missing the kick. Suited this trip from a nice draw. Trimconnection resumes here after some solid efforts last season.

Race Five: I'm Called Earl resumed with a solid win when well ridden. Up in class but has ability. Star Buck showed ability last time in including a Pinjarra win. Won recent 1000m Albany trial. Chaddie was placed first up before fair effort and has place prospects again. Jeneviv races in great form and solid effort last start behind Cherpara. Irish Target caught the eye first up when running on well. May be looking for more ground. Zarisk was a fair effort placed behind Adam's Time first up from a good draw.  Happy Hour Surt only winner of one in twenty two but recent form in stronger company has been encouraging.  Ridgewood Manna improved with a placing here last week.

Race Six: Carbineer not far away at two runs back and this trip will suit. He's Smokin butters up five days after fair effort at Esperance. Tidal Storm failed to flatter in three runs back, may go better for senior rider. Lovely Lucy resumes here after last start win Kalgoorlie. Good first up record. Weekly Express won three starts back, fair effort latest at Albany. Week Bix very good effort first up and though drawn wide has strong prospects. Jolanta Star horribly out of form but drops 6kg here.

Race Seven: Evil Force impressed with last start win at 1200m when racing second up. Up 1.5kg and drawn wide but has ability. Radio Pleasure good honest effort last start after unlucky at first run back. Our Calendar Girl was doing best work at finish last start. Expect similar effort here. Barn Burner is better than most recent form suggest. Will appreciate drop in class here. Trochee game effort when second at Mt Barker last week at same trip. Canny Besain easy winner first up then not far way from wide draw next outing. Bad draw again. Look Here Trousers fair effort first up then ran on strongly placed at Albany next outing. Need to reproduce that run here. The Mighty Boosh not far away at two runs back but has not won for along time. Seymour Kid resumes here and is suited this company. Majestic Range not too far away at third run back and not the worst. Tangram doing best work at finish last start when making good ground. Yet to be placed this track.

Esperance Review - Saturday December 12th

Terrific weather greeted patrons at the Esperance Bay Turf Club on Saturday. Trainer Brendan Corver booted home the trifecta in the last event and Trainer Debbie Warnes opened her seasons account when Brave Critic broke through for his Maiden success after nineteen starts.

Brave Critic

The Dunc’s IGA Maiden got the ball rolling and comeback jockey Shane Cull booted home the first winner. It was a while between drinks for the buoyant youngster who has successfully shed the kilos needed to get back into the saddle. Brave Critic who started long odds in last year’s Esperance Cup charged to victory and returned over $40 on tote. Prior to Saturday the Debbie Warnes trained six year old had start 19 times for just 2 thirds. He defeated the fast finishing Cut And Dried by half a length and early pacemaker The Key Cutter was a nose away in third position. Cut And Dried firmed from $19 on tote (6 minutes before start time) to less than $6 and flashed home from a long way back. A win won’t be far away for the four year old.

Race Two was the Quick ‘N’ Clean Carwash Sprint and the six experienced competitors look evenly matched on paper. Jay Dee Rocks set a fast tempo in front but was no match for King Of The Stalls who swept to victory in a near record 1.10.62 over the 1200m. Expedition ran on stylishly to be the runner up and Jay Dee Rocks found enough to hold third. King Of The Stalls started six times at Esperance last season and ended the season winless but with five minor placings. Favourite Dancing Granada got to the lead at the 200m, but wilted near the post to finish 5th.

The third was sponsored by McCreeds Classic Jewellers and Patrons D. Piercey and R Read. Three last start winners were engaged and the Mark Nelson (Albany) trained Lady Lavenham was solidly backed into an even money favourite. She didn’t let her supporters down, winning by almost a length over local Stormy Quest. Time Star caught the eye with a fast finishing third and Marvon Sher was just behind the placegetters after looking ‘gone’ at the top of the stretch.

The Bay Of Isles Financial Services Maiden was over 1100m and speedy six year old mare Racoff was able to break her Maiden status. After a rapid getaway she established a lead and with 200m looked set to win by a few lengths. However in the shadows of the post she weakened sharply and held on to win by just half a length over Outside Influence. The well backed favourite Competitive Street had a nice run behind the leader but could only manage a third.

The Concrete World and Roofline Trusses Handicap was won effortlessly by Donargy. This talented six year old won twice last season and also unsuccessfully had a tilt at a midweek race at Ascot. This season he looks to have matured nicely and after a nice first up win at the first meet repeated the dose on Saturday. Mr Magnificent loomed as a threat at the 150m mark but Donargy had plenty left in the tank. Mr Magnificent ran a gallant second and San Supremo, a stablemate of the winner ran on well to claim third.

Fourteen horses faced the starter in the Country Challenge Heat over 1300m and the race was sponsored by Duncan Stewarts Liquor Store. Brendan Corver saddled up four runners and spectacularly trained the Trifecta. Just Sue flashed down the outside for three kilo claiming apprentice Andrew Castle and claimed victory. Damon’s Halo was close up in second and Kimberleys rocketed the last 100m to snatch third. Lady Berthe, the fourth Corver runner hit the line strongly and missed out on fourth place by a head. The next meeting scheduled will be the traditional Boxing Day card..

Horses to follow ; Cut And Dried, King Of The Stalls, Time Star, Marvon Sher, Designer Diva, Moss Street, Donargy and Kimberleys.

Tables Ladders Strike Rates as at December 8th

Jockey David Chipman maintained a handy lead at the top of the Jockeys table after the Mt Barker meeting ahead of Peter Hall who did not ride. Shaun McGruddy moved into the top six after a day out with a treble. Trainer Steve Wolfe has a massive lead in the Trainers award after leading in four winners at Mt Barker, and for a large stable has an excellent strike rate to winners of 36%

Esperance Preview Saturday December 12th

Ryan Levitzke reports:
The second of a ten meeting season at the Esperance Bay Turf Club gets underway this Saturday afternoon. The rail will be located at the inside position, large fields is the order of the day with TAB coverage on Racing Radio. Former Queensland but now Albany based trainer Darryl Ward will be bringing a team of eight runners over for the meeting

The day kicks off at 2:07pm with the running of the Dunc’s Super IGA Maiden (1300m) and Gotanygoss and The Key Cutter loom as the big guns. Both were minor placegetters at the opening meeting and there is a solid chance they will run the Quinella. Cheval Rose is a newcomer drawn well and wasn’t beaten far last start at Bunbury. Former Victorian La Mia Dorabella is open to improvement and Snow Minx has a rough place chance from barrier one.

The Quick ‘N’ Clean Carwash Sprint will be run over 1200m and newcomer Grasa Express is the interesting runner. His five opponents all contested the same event two weeks ago when Jay Dee Rocks led throughout to beat Dancing Granada and Expedition respectively. Dancing Granada gets in well at the weights and looms as a leading candidate and leading hoop Willie Arnold has been booked for the mount. Expect He’s Smokin’, Expedition and King Of The Stalls to all strip fitter but they all have big weights to combat.

Race Three kicks off the Quaddie and is sponsored by McCreeds Classic Jewellers, Patron D. Piercey and Patron R. Read. Last start winners Lady Lavenham, Trida Brando and Ron’s Gem all look suited over the 1200m distance. Time Star resumes for a top trainer and Stormy Quest should benefit after the first up performance. Em Dante looks to have each way claims after running second in a recent Trial at Albany and Via Delfino has been placed 3 times in New South Wales.

The Bay Of Isles Financial Services Maiden (1100m) sees the clash of Racoff and Competitive Street. Competitive Street looks set for a bold showing from barrier one and Racoff should be in front for a very long way. It’ll Be Sweet will have some admirers after a placing at Mt. Barker last month and Outside Influence should also be considered for exotic calculations given the fact that she has been placed in 5 of 12 career starts.

The Concrete World and Roofline Trusses Handicap (1100m) is choc-full of chances and finding the winner will be extremely difficult. Parkside, Mr Magnificent, Arcade Attraction all performed well at the opening meeting and Tashi Delek was an all the way winner. A host of other newcomers boast solid form and it’s hard to work out who will be the favourite/s. Trainer Brendan Corver has opted this race for last start winner Donargy, and gains a run as emergency with Cummings scratched. Good luck !!!

The meeting concludes at 5:23pm with the running of the Duncan Stewarts Liquor Store Country Challenge Heat (1300m) and a capacity field of fourteen will face the starter. Donargy is an early scratching, allowing last start Albany placegetter Cummings a start. Key’s Ace wasn’t beaten far last start but rises in weight because of the class drop. Second Lady is capable of improving and Just Sue is sure to be finishing strongly. Lady Berthe looked very impressive first up and is guaranteed to be blossoming late as well.

Mt Barker Review Tuesday December 8th.

Trainer Steve Wolfe has put himself in a good position to have a realistic chance of grabbing the Mt Barker Turf Club $10,000 trainers bonus after leading in four winners at Mt Barker on Tuesday. Wolfe now has five eligible winners (after two full meetings) and to get the seven required, he only needs one further winner and then the testing assignment, the winner of either The Mungrup Sprint or Mt Barker Cup.  That is not without a real chance, as both smart gallopers Watson's Bay and All Class could be heading to the Sprint, and handy stayers Goldtown and Impact Rating could be back to contest the Cup.

Race One : With colours made famous in the Great Southern by his father Eric, trainer Peter Hansen opened the day with an easy win with his handy mare Carminemadonna. The lightly raced mare sat on the favourite Daintysfury, and came away to win easily for Jockey Mark Forder from Daintysfury and Dark N Stormy a distant third. Rambler was a good effort first up finishing fourth after been held up on the corner. Hansen Snr trained Albany Cup winners back in the seventies with My Mystery (twice) and King Tide who was ridden by the late Ray Oliver, and set the Bookmakers rocking been backed in from 20/1.

Race Two: At the 200m any of six runners had a winning chance, but Jockey Shaun McGruddy pushed the heavily backed I'm Called earl through to win by a neck over North Royal who put up a great effort after racing wide. Bonds Lane was doing his best work at the finish and ran into third ahead of the early favourite Ladyofmydreams who looked to have every chance. From The Fire put in his best effort in five starts as was not far from the winner.

Race Three: Old timer Billyaintsilly defied the weight of 60kg, a slow start to lead after 200m and held the field at bay to win after a long run of outs. Placegetters Saramento and Why So Blue had hard luck stories in running to fill the placings, but nothing can be taken away from the winner, who Justin Parson's has turned the eight year old around after he lost form last season.

Race Four: All Class showed just that with an effortless win beating The Tax Man and Commandeer who set a brisk pace in front. Carrying top weight of 60kg, the mare ridden by Shaun McGruddy was eased down to win by 2 1/4 lengths. Our Calendar Girl was finishing full of ruunning to just miss the placings.

Race Five: Trainer Steve Wolfe peeled off three races in a row, when Major Bligh proved too strong at the finish to beat the other two fancies Comfyaz and Lauries Dream who both had every chance. Major Bligh improved from mid field at the 600m and gives the impression he is capable of winning upto 1600m.

Race Six: Race hardened Thumbuster with work in his legs outstayed his opponents to win the first staying test of the season. With a genuine pace set in front Thumbuster finished too well for up and coming Boundary Street and Tony's Angel who was doing his best work at the end. Carrallen Steel made ground but was not a winning chance.

Race Seven: Trainer Peter Western had his first winner for the season when On The Double produced a last to first effort and gave Shaun McGruddy the third leg of a treble. On The Double was basically first up after a missing the jump and trailing the field around at Bunbury recently and then was sent back to trials by Stewards for racing uncompetitively. Trochee who was having his third run back after a long absence led and fought on well to run second just ahead of Starline Porsche and King's Tribute who was a very good effort first up after racing wide. Tangram and Lipton both did not finish far from the placings.

Race Eight: Five year old Adams Time made it two from two after sitting outside the leader and coming away to win from Zarisk and Ridgewood Manna. The win gave Wolfe four winners for the day and Jockey Takahide Ikenushi a double. Myth N Mystery first up, caught the eye coming from last to finish fourth.

Coming up Esperance Preview and Mt Barker in Pictures.

Race One: Key To Target, pay to forget last two runs, latest when missed start badly. Only placed once and maybe on last chance with punters. Rambler was placed at Kalgoorlie debut then unplaced at next three. Resumes here. Dark N Stormy resumes after two unplaced runs and a recent Albany trial win. Carminemadonna was a good effort when runner up to Cherpara followed by 5th at Narrogin. Dainty's Fury is knocking on the door after two good efforts at her latest starts.

Race Two: Jazzy Saint only placed at one of nine starts, and that was over more ground.  Dastardly yet to place in seven starts but latest runs have been fair in stronger company. I'm Called Earl placed at debut Ascot two year old form since moderate, and resumes here after unplaced trial Albany. Shovely makes debut here after fair recent trial form. Lady Of My Dreams placed at two of six starts and latest runs good in stronger company.

Race Three: Billyaintsilly placed at latest two runs but asked to carry big weight here. Spitfighter was a good first up effort at Narrogin and has ability. Pwakkers Back won Narrogin two starts back and better suited at this trip. Saramento ultra consistent last year and resumes after trial placing at Albany. Why So Blue resumes after trial placing Albany. Always a threat this company. Rhapsodie Heights was a stylish winner at Collie. has not started for 6 weeks and this is harder.

Race Four:  All Class, goes up in weight here, but pay to overlook run last start when forced to be ridden upside down. Timely Reign has been placed at two runs back and suited at this trip.  The Tax Man close up last start when ridden forward. Ready to show his best. Sir Onan has finished close up at two runs back and better suited this distance. Our Calender Girl sprinted well fresh first up at Narrogin. Meets harder field here.
Late Change not placed in three runs but close up Bunbury last outing. Commandeer has been close up at two runs back and capable of surprising.

Race Five:  Laurie's Dream has been knocking on the door and good effort first up at Narrogin. Flanno's best run in thirteen starts was close up at Geraldton recentley. and worth thought. Rhodes has finished mid field at two race starts Bunbury and drops in class here. Major Bligh caught the eye after a slow start when second to Lady Lavenham at Albany last week, and strong claims here. Glowing Vain capable of improving on first up effort at Albany last week. Comfyaz has looked promising at only two starts, latest second at Bunbury. Well placed here. Wild Dream better effort at second race start at Narrogin, this not any easier though.

Race Six: Thumbuster was placed Ascot Mid Week 1820m four starts back, and a Bunbury 2000m winner two starts ago and is race hard for this. Tony's Angel has finished mid field over ground at latest runs and will be suited this class. Carellen Steel won second up over 1500m then fair effort 1700m Narrogin. Has ability but hard to follow. Boundary Street was a solid 1400m Maiden winner Albany then good third 1700m Narrogin. Up and comer worth plenty of thought. Ruberian not far away at two runs back. Rarely wins but likely leader here and each-way claims. St Peregrine was a good second at Albany two runs back but mixes form.

Rcae Seven: Royalistic has had two runs back latest good third Narrogin and is ideally suited this trip. Aknightus, does not win many but never far away this company, latest close up at Narrogin. King's Tribute and On The Double resume here after recent Albany trial and both are likely to need the run. Lipton had fair form at kalgoorlie through the winter and fair effort first up at Bunbury recentley. Starline Porche has shown ability in limited starts latest a win over 1100m at Narrogin. Czar You Crazy showed marked improvement when placed at Narrogin, but form hard to follow. Raunchy Business beaten favourite at last two starts but not far away and this trip will suit. Tangram fair efforts at two runs back and looks suited this trip and should be ready to produce best.

Race Eight: Adams Time was a very impressive winner at debut Narrogin and strong claims again here. City Of Subiaco was a Narrogin winner at her third race start. Harder here but well drawn. Russian To Win was placed here two starts ago but overall form is just moderate Zarisk resumes after a spell. Ran some fair races last time in and should go well fresh. Em Dante was a winner last season but never fired at Kalgoorlie through the winter. Myth 'N" Mystery resumes after racing in stronger company through the winter. Capable of surprising. Ridgewood Starlight caught the eye first up when finishing well at Mt Barker. Races best when fresh, drawn wide but gets back.

Tables Ladders Strike Rates as at December 2nd.

Jockey David Chipman had his lead at the top of the table slightly reduced with Peter Hall riding a treble last meeting from his only three rides which has boosted his winning strike rate to a win every two rides taken.

Trainer Steve Wolfe has got off to a flyer early in the season with a double at each of the three full meetings and leads clearly on points from Gerry Hughes and Allen McNamara (Snr) who has 3 winners from 4 runners.

Albany Review Tuesday December 1st

Albany conducted a good seven event card, with Jockey Peter Hall the star of the meeting with a treble from his only three rides. Hall teamed up with Alan Mcnamara Senior (Double) and Junior for his wins, whilst David Chipman continued on his merry way with another double for the Steve Wolfe stable.

Peter Hall returns to scale on Cherpara
Race One: Lady Lavenham proved her first start at Pinjarra was an abberation, with an easy victory over the 1200m for apprentice rider Damien Lane and trainer Mark Nelson. The three year old was eased down to win by 3 1/2 lengths in a smart 1.10.29, which was only 0.29 slower than the Open class sprint. Major Bligh caught the eye after a slow start running on well to finish second, with Dinglish given every chance back third. Poireau ran a nice race at his debut, as did Good Girl Lucy first up after a spell.

Lady Lavenham (Damien Lane)
Race Two: The Chipman/Wolfe team provided another winner in Midnight Touch who had a good run on the fence, gained a late split and scored narrowly over Reflective Image and Pulashaky who both ran good races, and had settled down to a two horse war from the top of the straight. November Red loomed up on the corner but was under pressure 200m out, whilst Eternal Advice got lost in traffic before the turn and ran on well but was never a winning possibility.

Midnight Touch returns to scale
Race Three: A double came up for Chipman and Wolfe when Watson's Bay won with his head on his chest in good company in 1.10.00. Chipman had Watsons Bay in the box seat and took the lead shortly after heads were turned for home and was eased up to beat Week Bix who battled on well after leading and Carbineer who was a distant third.  Weekly Express ran on fairly after getting back early on.

Race Four: In a race run at a crawl with no one keen to lead, smart mare Movie World won in a punishing finish narrowly over outsider Masters Seal who fought on well and Sprited Rocket who was running on late. Favourite All Class settled at the rear and made a move at the 500m when the race was going to turn into a sprint home but struggled over the last 150m.

Movie World (Shaun Meeres) off to the city next start

Race Five: The start of the Peter Hall juggernaut, when the well backed and promising Evil Force scored a solid win over the fast finishing Look Here Trousers and Radio Pleasure. The Tax Man was ridden forward and did not finish that far away in fourth spot.  Just Sue and Punk'd were doing their best work at the finish.

Race Six: The rage was for Briello who was not disgraced in finishing fourth at his second race start, but Chepara was an easy winner and came away to win as she liked after racing on the pace. Jeneviv was a good second after been ridden hard from the 500m when they started to sprint. She gives the impression she is looking for ground. Irish Target first up, made up plenty of ground to finish a good third. Stockmans Dream jumped awkwardly and was a good first up effort, whilst Chaddie did not have a lot of luck in the straight.

Race Seven: Stormyglow looked in trouble just before the corner when well back, but finished powerfully to win by a neck over the fast finishing Kimberlys and Cummings who showed plenty of fight. Deed I Do was not far away after coming along the fence, and Not So Secret made good ground late. Canny Besain was held up shortly after turning for home, and battled on fairly though had his chance the last 150m.

Peter Hall winds out the treble with Stormyglow

Albany Preview Tuesday December 1st

Albany's second meeting of the season provides a Seven race card with some good even fields which will produce some good betting races. The WA Country Builders Sprint over 1200m brings together an excellent field of eight runners, where a case can be made for the majority of the starters.

Late Showers 23°C

Race One: Dinglish ran a fair race at Mt Barker on a slow track, and before that was a nice run at Pinjarra. Key To Target has been placed once in seven starts, and pay to overlook last run. King Point has looked promising at trials and makes debut here. Major Bligh resumes after two race starts where both runs were fair. Designer Diva was a good run first up and is never far away this company. Glowing Vain resumes here and raced very well fresh last season without winning. It'll Be Sweet was a good first up third at Mt Barker, wipe her last run on a slow track. Lady Lavenham trialled well before failing first up straight 1000m at Pinjarra. Pay to forget that run.

Race Two: Pulashaky was a good effort first up and now at a suitable distance where he raced well at last season. Eternal Advice showed promise last season and very good first up over 1400m. November Red has had chances and just a run at Mt Barker but slow track may be an excuse. My Equine Friend was a good effort first up, then had nightmare run next start but was not disgraced. Drawn wide again. Midnight Touch was a fair effort last start and well drawn here.

Race Three: Carbineer looked unlucky first up when held up and ran on well late. Tidal Storm yet to show his best form in two starts back, and can do better. Titcherman raced well fresh at Mt Barker and always a chance in this type of race. Secret Courier raced wide when good run at Albany then easy winner at Mt barker on a slow track. In form. Weekly Express pay to overlook start in city and go on good first up win when ridden well. Watsons Bay was an  good winner in lesser company when racing first up. Has won this class before. Week Bix resumes here, went through classes last season but found open class a bit harder.

Race Four:  All Class comes back in grade but up in weights here, but with a 1.5kg claim looks very hard to beat. Jolanta Start has not shown up in two runs back but better suited this company. Spirited Rocket was a good run first up at Ascot when only beaten 3 lengths. Movie World was a solid winner first up, but steps up in class here. Don't Tell Toby will be suited at the trip after two runs back from a spell. Capel Time was disappointing at Mt Barker after fair Mid week city form. St Peregrine was a solid effort first up but this is harder.

Race Five: The Tax Man back in class and but up in weight after a good first up effort, gets 1.5kg claim here. Radio Pleasure not much luck first up but this may be too short. Evil Force was a fair effort at Mt Barker first up and will strip much fitter here. Pwakkers Back has returned to old form and was a Narrogin winner last week. Comandeer likely to improve on fair first up effort at Albany. Just Sue resumes after struggling at Kalgoorlie through the winter.

Race Six: Chaddie was doing best work at finish first up but drawn awkward here. Cherpara was a good Maiden winner first up and nicely placed here. Briello caught the eye at debut when running on powerfully. Looks promising. Jeneviv at two runs back has been right in the mix and has claims again here. Stockmans Dream trialled well recently and ideally drawn here and suited. Ridgewood Starlight caught the eye first up at Mt Barker and not without claims.

Race Seven: All Spots was a comfortable winner first up in milder company. Stormyglow was pipped on the post first up at Mt Barker and strong claims here. Trochee was not far away first up for 30 months. Will keep improving. Canny Besain was an easy winner first up in mild company. Drawn wide but should be respected. Not So Secret was a Northam winner last preparation and resumes here. Kimberleys resumes here and races well this track.

Esperance Review Saturday November 27th with Ryan Levitzke

Trainer Brendan Corver and Willie Arnold picked up where they left off last season, with a stable treble to open the Esperance Bay Turf Club season last Saturday.

They were off on their winning ways in the first event (B. Wilson and C. Murray Memorial Maiden) with debutant Trida Brando. The son of Stormy’s Son capitalised on a pie ride in transit. Racoff, carrying 52kg set a brisk tempo before being overhauled in the shadows of the post and Competitive Street battled on well to hold third. Newcomer and favourite Ella Rose didn’t look suited by the fast speed and could only manage a fourth.

The J. Mathews and F. Conway Memorial Maiden was staged over 1200m and local trainer Jeff Eeles reigned supreme, winning with Ron’s Gem. Ron’s Gem is out of Ron’s Wish, a mare Eeles also prepared and tasted plenty of success with. The Mark Nelson trained Gotanygoss jumped well and was prominent throughout before finishing second by half a head. The Key Cutter, who set the speed finished a close up third and was 5.50 lengths clear of the others.

The third race was a Country Challenge Heat called the D. Plunkett and D.Banner Memorial Handicap and Donargy provided Willie Arnold and Brendan Corver with an early double. The six year old had switched trainers during the off season and after a good jump won easily by more than a length. His time (1.10.58) was just over a second outside of the track record held by Esperance ‘great’ William’s Steal. The Sally Roworth prepared Arcade Attraction was gallant in defeat and the Mt. Barker trained Billyaintsilly worked home well to finish third. Ten year old Birkhall drifted well back but hit the line powerfully to claim fourth.

Race Four was the Paul Sullivan Memorial (1100m) and local Tashi Delek led throughout in a slick 1.04.26. The Jo-Anne Leeson trained Busterbell finished strongly to get within a length and favourite Stormy Quest ran third. Publican’s Horse caught the eye after missing the kick to fill fourth position. The Horizon Power Sprint was over 1100m and Jay Dee Rocks provided Garry Price and Kiryn Waldeck with their first winner of the season. He enjoyed a fair pull in the weights (52kg) over the main fancies He’s Smokin’ (62.5kg), King Of The Stalls (59kg) and Expedition (58.5kg) and proved too slippery. Dancing Granada was ridden forward and was the runner up with stable mate Expedition grabbing third.

The Bow Brothers Memorial was the last race and run over 1300m. Lady Berthe, trained by Brendan Corver and ridden by Willie Arnold powered home to beat Mr. Magnificent. The winner’s stablemate Damon’s Halo filled third position. Parkside set the pace and only weakened the last little bit, this gelding will benefit greatly from the hitout. Ten gallopers went around in a barrier trial after the last so expect slightly bigger fields at the next meeting which is scheduled for Saturday December 12.

Horses to follow ; Racoff, Competitive Street, Gotanygoss, Donargy, Publicans Horse, Jay Dee Rocks and Parkside.
