Esperance Preview Saturday January 24th

Six races will be held this Saturday afternoon at the Esperance Bay Turf Club with the first scheduled for 2:04pm. It’s the Esperance Smash Repairs Handicap over 1400m and a small field of six will start. Sarabella was narrowly beaten for third last week and is a likely improver second up while The Menace, Cyclonic Force and Twice The Speed all possess strong finishing bursts.

Race Two is the Esperance Window Tinting Maiden over 1300m and Give It Time looks awfully hard to beat after running a solid second last Saturday. Royal Wing has been placed at her last three starts and looms as the obvious threat. On exposed form it’s hard to see any other horse challenging and the Quinella approach may well be the best option.

The MCM Protection Handicap is over 1300m and sprinters He’s Smokin’, King Of The Stalls and Ears Loppy are the main hopes. Aelstreet and Armagold will be outsiders while Fizzy Kel gets in well at the weights. The fourth event is over 1950m and no doubt many of the acceptors are hoping to have a tilt at the Esperance Cup later next month. Key’s Ace has been thereabouts this season without winning while Danish Currency is sure to have plenty of support. The Gift has impressed with a first and a second at his two Esperance starts and Interrogator is proven over the long journey.

Race Five is sponsored by Star Transport and Donargy returns from a freshen up for leading trainer Brendan Corver. Moss Street is a recent winner and Landmark Lady put it all together at her last run when triumphant over subsequent winner Outside Influence. Alabama is a recent trial winner and the likes of Chesta Piniton, Summer Crossing and Western Crown all demand respect.

The Sharpe Brothers Handicap wraps things up at 5:18pm and Stormy Express is the likely favourite after winning first up. Lord Airlie looks to be working up to a win and both Publicans Horse and Mr Magnificent have already tasted success this season. Silver Ambush is another that could be over the odds despite some poor numerical form.

Early selections ; Cyclonic Force, Give It Time, Ears Loppy, Danish Currency, Moss Street and Lord Airlie.

Kojonup Picnic Races in Pictures

The annual "Wandecla" Kojonup Picnup races were again a great success on Australia Day, with a big crowd in attendance to see outsider Majestic Range ridden by former Jockey Kristian Hawkins the victor in the Kojonup Cup for trainer Kevin Allen. In one of the best Cup finishes only a length seperated the first four runners

Other winners were Two Fruits (Alison Wyer), Punk'd (Ron Elvy) Fulglas (Jodie Hill) and Flinders Way (Ben Pearce) twice. Seen enjoying the day out was regular supporter of Kojonup, Tom Percy QC, leading trainer Adam Durrant, local identity Peter Sheridan and Northam trainer Kevin Anderson to name a few.

As usual the Club left no stone unturned, to ensure racegoers had a great day at one of the very very few unique picnic race meetings left in Western Australia.

Esperance Review Saturday January 23rd

Saturday’s meeting at the Esperance Bay Turf Club commenced with the running of the Healthway Eat More Fruit Handicap. Publicans Horse was dropped out to last in the early stages by rider Nicole Hopwood and flashed home to win by a head over race favourite Miss Alonso. The three kilogram pull in the weights certainly assisted the Derek Jones galloper over the concluding stages. Local stayer Interrogator battled on well for third.

Only a pint-sized field of four contested the Eat More Veg Handicap over 1600m. Burnzy had the best form but carried top weight of 58kg. He took the outright lead mid race before holding off Danish Currency to score by a neck. Burnzy has now won two out of three at Esperance. Grasa Express filled third ahead of Key’s Ace who was fourth.

The third event was sponsored by Roger Goss Livestock Transport and ten horses competed in the 1200m Maiden. Outside Influence was well supported after four consecutive minor placings and was a deserved winner. She was ridden confidently by Peter Farrell and reigned supreme by a length. Helen Harding trained the Quinella with Give It Time battling on well to be the runner up. Aint No Angel finished three lengths away in third spot and newcomer Sarabella was a nose away in fourth.

The Kalgoorlie – Boulder Racing Club sponsored Race Four, their opening meeting is set down for Saturday March 20. Local three year old filly Ron’s Gem was well backed and didn’t let punters down, winning by a head over Put Option who battled on strongly. Outsider Summer Crossing loomed as a winning chance at the 300m mark but peaked on the run to finish third.

The Healthway Go For 2 and 5 Handicap was over 1400m and the first four in betting filled the first four placings. Wing Star parted company with rider Shaun Meeres on the way to the gates and following a veterinary examination the mare was passed fit to be a starter. Just as well too, she was beautifully ridden and proved too strong for Hackett’s Heart, Lord Airlie and Twice The Speed. Well done to local jockey Nicole Hopwood who rode a double. Racing returns to the EBTC this Saturday (January30) with the first race scheduled for approximately 2pm. The following meeting will be another Friday twilight fixture on February 30 with a late start and a late finish.

Horses to follow ; Miss Alonso, Danish Currency, Majestaad, Put Option and Wing Star.

Jarnac finished on well for a distant third with Reflective Image and Good Girl Lucy running nice races. Well backed favourite Laurie's Dream raced eratically and was sent back to trials.

Race Three: Five year old mare Aint No Lady scored a solid win to give Trainer John Askevold and Jockey Kelly Davidson the first leg of a winning double. Cheval Magic was an improved effort to fight on well for second with Lukaston coming from well back for third. King Before Dawn was a fair effort to finish fourt at his debut from a wide draw.

Race Five: Flighty mare Stockman's Dream put her best foot forward to just beat Alabameramer who was a big effort first up by a nose. The Keillor Kid ran on solidly to get third from leader Speedy Bohemian.

Race Six: Timely Reign patiently ridden by Noel Rudland rallied late to wear down Movie World and Attadale who both looked the winner at certain stages in the straight. Movie World at her first run in over a month was caught wide early and fought on well. Viscount Cameron racing second up finished on well for fourth. Sir Clase was disappointing again.

Race Seven: Apprentice Kyra Yuill booted home the second leg of a double when Don't Tell Toby finished powerfully to get over the top of a game Commandeer with On The Double finishing well for third. Favourite King's Tribute looked to have every chance and finished fourth just ahead of Canny Beseain and Megablitz.

Race SEight: The on pace runners fought out the finish here with Chaddie just getting the verdict over Disco Reveller who led and never gave in. Jazzy Saint raced in the box seat and held on to run third with Street Darling a very good run to finish fourth. Whittingham was not far away whilst Albanyorascot never looked a winning chance along with Dark Humor with both near last on the corner.

Western Zed fair effort first up and will strip fitter. Week Bix form solid and not disgraced Ascot last Saturday. Win overdue. Brunelleschi looked in need of the run first up.

Race Five: Mr Magnificent followed Esperance win with unplaced effort after racing wide. The Keillor Kid has struck form with two wins from last three. In form but not as prolific this track. Speedy Bohemian two good efforts at two runs back and ready to show best. Why So Blue is capable of better than last two efforts. Gotanygoss finished off strongly to win here 1200m. Up in class but shows ability. She's A Saint raced well here last season and resumes after good trial. Stockman's Dream very disappoiting last two but down in weight at a better suited trip. Cummings mixes form but on best form has prospects.

Race Six: Viscount Cameron fair effort first up but may need another start to reach peak. Sir Clase yet to hit form this time in but this trip suits and better suited. Timely Reign chased home Rock My Pago last Sunday and ideally suited here at this distance. Phorium placed Ascot three runs back and race hard for this. Cheval Rose big step in class on 2000m win last week, but was impressive. Movie World pay to forget run in city and go on previous form. Not raced for thirty four days a query, but has the ability. Trochee very diappointing last outing when beaten along way out.

Race Seven: Port Regis has had two runs back and should be ready to produce best form. Sir Onan found trip too far last start better suited here. Stormyglow distant third last Sunday over 1300m, this trip will suit. Alsaah Warrior resuming here and may need the outiong, but has won at the trip. Chaddie pay to forget last run over 1300m. Suited here at the distance and in milder company. Dark Humour beaten favourite last week when slow away. capable of bouncing back. Street Darling this tougher than last start win at Esperance. Disco Reveller struggling for best form but this distance will help. Mctease forget last run over 1300m, far better suited here. Whittingham did not show up second up in solid company.

Esperance Preview Saturday January 23rd

This Saturday afternoon a five event programme at the Esperance Bay Turf Club with the first scheduled for 2:53pm.

Race One is the Healthway Eat More Fruit Handicap over 1600m and a small field of five will start. Miss Alonso was ultra impressive last Friday at the twilight meeting and the rise to a mile shouldn’t pose any problems. Both Damon’s Halo and Publicans Horse were runners up at their last runs and loom as the obvious dangers

Race Two is the Eat More Veg Handicap and again a field of five will compete over 1600m. Burnzy will start a warm favourite for local trainer Helen Harding. The six year old stallion was an impressive winner on Boxing Day and although unplaced last start he was beaten just over a length. Key’s Ace will be fit and he will appreciate the drop to 54.5kg. Grasa Express disappointed last start but did perform well at his previous run when a close up third.

The Roger Goss Livestock Transport Maiden looks tailor made for four year old mare Outside Influence. She has been a minor placegetter at all four starts this season and Saturday’s race looks easier. She is noted for her early speed and should take serious running down. Give It Time, Snow Minx and Aint No Angel are the horses that look to have the most viable Quinella claims.

Race Four is sponsored by the Kalgoorlie Boulder Racing Club and will be run over 1300m. Summer Crossing is an interesting runner along with Alabama who impressed in a Trial last Friday. San Supremo and Ron’s Gem are both recent winners and Put Option wasn’t far away last week. Kimberleys is another with a chance but she has disappointed at her last couple.

The Healthway Go For 2 and 5 Handicap wraps things up at 5:26pm and Hackett’s Heart looks awfully hard to hold out. He flashed home to win his last start in spectacular fashion and Willie Arnold has been booked for the ride. However Twice The Speed and Wing Star are sure to provide strong resistance after strong seconds at their last runs. Cut And Dried is capable of challenging too, especially if the tempo is slick.

Early selections ; Miss Alonso, Burnzy, Outside Influence, San Supremo and Hackett’s Heart.

Mt Barker Mungrup Sprint Day Review

On a hot sunny day, a big crowd was on hand to see former local Trainer Darren McAuliffe take out the $90,000 Mungrup Stud Sprint with Spitfire Ace, who held out a fast finishing Raw Metal and local galloper Carbineer.  On a day when the track was upgraded to a Good2, two track records were broken for the 1100m and 1300m distances.

Race One: Jake The Musk confirmed the support into favourtism was justified with an easy all the way win at his sixth race start, beating From The Fire who ran an improved race and Rivotio who ran on fairly but never looked a winning chance. Laurie's Dream finished next, but is struggling to break Maiden company.

Race Two: Rock My Pago was far too good and came away to win easily over Timely Reign who finished off the 2000m well. Sir Clase is struggling to get back to his best form, but the should be better suited next run.

Race Three: Montclar Miss improved on its last run, with a solid effort to beat a very green Go Red Dot and Ibrahimovic who ran on strongly. Royal Escapade sat back and and finished on fairly, whilst Ivory Lady was a very good effort at her debut from a wide draw.

Race Four: The Golden Dynamo finally broke through after seven placings with a solid win over Hussonace who battled on fairly, but looked dour and maybe looking for more ground. Favourite Puerto Galera was given every chance and was a shade disappointing. Pulashaky ran another honest race and is sure to win one soon.

Race Five: Favourite Jean had the run of the race and easily won breaking the track 1100m record. Saramento raced outside the leader and fought on well, and a win is close. Pwakkers Back ran on fairly, with Versaint going hard in front and just missing the placings. Punk'd raced back in the field and was never in it.

Race Six: There was plenty of chances at the 100m here, but Cheval Rose racing third up at only her fifth race start stayed the trip best and got up narrowly over Ruberian who looked the winner with Carallen Steel close up third. St Peregrine looked a chance at the 100m but just failed to stay the trip. Trochee never looked to travel well and finished well back. The win of Cheval Rose was a change of luck for the stable.

Race Seven: Trimconnection appreciated the extra 100m and made it back to back wins with a solid victory over Redford who was a very good effort first up. All Spots again ran a consistent race to finish third, whilst Cherpara looked flat and struggled.

Race Eight: Spitfire Ace fired straight out onto the pace and took the lead after straightening and held out Raw Metal who ran on solidly from the rear to finish second with Carbineer also running on well for third. Electrical General who raced three wide finished on well for fourth with Noble Steed a solid effort. Favourite Proart had no luck in running, with a check shortly after the start and then held up, when Northwater Boy was beaten before the turn.

Race Nine: Star Buck continued his good form with an easy victory over Troubled Smile who hit the front at the 250m and battled on fairly. Stormglow finished a distant third, and I'm Called Earl ran on strongly.  Height Of Heights set a solid pace in front and faded racing first up.

Race Ten: Jockey Shaun Meeres went within a head of riding four winners when Look Here Trousers just missed out when beaten by The Keillor Kid who ran on well for apprentice Amy Sandiford, who should look forward to getting more opportunities soon. King's Tribute ran on well to just get third ahead of pacemaker Speedy Bohemian. Favourite Dark Humour was slow into stride and never looked likely.

Esperance Review - Friday January 15th

Last Friday the Sponsor’s raffle for this year’s Esperance Cup was conducted. This year’s feature event will be staged on Saturday February 27 and known as the Express Yourself Printing Esperance Cup (2000m).

Friday’s twilight fixture kicked off after 3pm with the Hahn Super Dry Handicap. Tracey Frizzell and apprentice Talia Maor drew first blood with local mare Landmark Lady who stormed home to beat the speedy Outside Influence. Favourite The Menace powered home after a tardy getaway to finish third and is definitely a horse to follow. Unfortunately pace-maker Racoff sustained a serious injury and has been retired from racing.
The XXXX Gold Maiden held a capacity field of fourteen and the pace was on from the start. The Steve Wolfe trained Street Darling came with a well-timed run to defeat Wing Star and Royal Wing was a length away third. David Chipman gave the Great Southern visitor the perfect ride and held on to win by a neck. Aint No Angel was well backed into favourite with bookmakers but only beat one opponent home and was beaten more than twelve lengths.
The Emu Draft Handicap was over 1400m and former leading rider Rod Kirkup prepared the winner. Miss Alonso settled well back but weaved a passage in the home straight to defeat Damon’s Halo by a half head. Cyclonic Force rattled home from a rearward position to finish third and should be winning soon. The likes of Kimberleys and Keys To Windsor looked disappointing on face value while Mr Magnificent  could be forgiven after coursing wide thoughout.
The Tooheys Extra Dry Handicap provided Brendan Corver’s stable-star Just Sue with another impressive and powerful victory. The mare settled near the rear for in-form apprentice Andrew Castle and began to build her momentum from the 500m mark. She surged down the centre of the track to win by a neat length over The Gift who performed well after a surprise first up win. Key’s Ace was ridden forward and showed determination to hold on for third. Just Sue has now won four in a row and trainer Brendan Corver declared on radio that he intends to have a tilt at the cup with her come season’s end.
The Swan Draught Sprint only held a field of six but was made interesting by the difference in weights. Ears Loppy, a galloper known for taking a run to find his best, sailed down the outside with  just 51kg on his back to claim victory over King Of The Stalls. There was a 7kg pull in the weights and the outsider was able to hold the lead and on the line win by half a length. Pace-maker He’s Smokin’ held on for third position.
The Hahn Premium Light Handicap provided apprentice Andrew Castle with a riding treble. He gave Stormy Express the ideal run in transit and defeated 3/1 favourite Arcade Attraction by half a length. San Supremo finished third ahead of Put Option and apprentices filled 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th. On Saturday at Ascot Andrew Castle had one ride for one win. Street Value returned $18.70 on tote and it’s fair to say Castle’s 3kg claim isn’t going to last long.
The next meeting scheduled at the Esperance Bay Turf Club is this coming Saturday with the first race set down for around 2pm. Horses to follow ; The Menace, Wing Star, Cyclonic Force, Just Sue, Ears Loppy and Put Option.

Esperance Twilight Preview Friday 15th January

This Friday’s meeting at the Esperance Bay Turf Club is a twilight meeting. The first race is scheduled for 3:03pm and the sixth and last is set down for 6:02pm. The EBTC is expecting a large jovial crowd by the time the Quaddie begins just after four o’clock.

The Hahn Super Dry Handicap kicks things off with ten horses to face the starter. Racoff looms as the likely leader and should take running down with Esperance based rider Kirryn Waldeck in the saddle. The Menace is a last start winner albeit at Kalgoorlie five months ago, Give It Time is an interesting runner and Outside Influence has been placed at her last 3 starts.

A capacity field of fourteen have accepted for the XXXX Gold Maiden. The event looks to be between Cut And Dried and Royal Wing. Both gallopers have been minor placegetters at their two runs this preparation but Cut And Dried has the advantage of an inside barrier. Mosaytic hasn’t been too far away and offers a value option for Trifectas.

The Emu Draft Handicap is over 1400m and Mr Magnificent looks very hard to beat after his brilliant last start victory. Fizzy Kel should be fitter after his first up effort and Cyclonic Force is one to keep an eye on after her eye-catching third at the last meeting. Miss Alonso and Kimberleys, despite both being disappointing at their last starts certainly have the ability to challenge.

The Tooheys Extra Dry Handicap is over 1600m and Just Sue deserves to start a warm favourite. The six year old mare boasts an impeccable track record and has scored at her last three starts. The Gift was also very impressive at his last start and must come under serious consideration. Danish Currency and Key’s Ace are the other leading chances.

Only a small field of six have accepted for the Swan Draught Sprint and the handicapping system looks to have evened the field up nicely. It’s hard to split the likes of He’s Smokin’, King Of The Stalls, Expedition and Grasa Express and although Dancing Granada and Ears Loppy don’t have great form, they both have the luxury of carrying light weights.

The final race is the Hahn Premium Light Handicap and there are a host of winning chances. Arcade Attraction, San Supremo and Tashi Delek are all recent winners. Parkside, Danger Man, Western Crown, Chesta Piniton and Stormy Express are all worthy of Quaddie consideration too.

Early selections ; Racoff, Royal Wing, Cyclonic Force, Just Sue, He’s Smokin’ and Arcade Attraction.   - Ryan Levitzke

Albany Preview/Review Thursday January 7th

Racing returned to Albany on Thursday, but after the first race the track was deemed unsafe and the remainder of the meeting was abandoned. In the first race, Favourite Albanyascot overcame a slow start to win, after Meclang slipped badly on the home turn creating a chain reaction with Speed Baby losing the rider after coming down. Thankfully horse and rider were unharmed.

Race One:  Albanyorascot looks the goods here on his very good first up run at this trip, but cannot afford to be tardy out of the barriers again. Dan Falbrav was a moderate effort first up and need to do better. Lukaston was not beaten far first up at Albany and has strong prospects. Baggervain did not show up at debut but can be an improver here. From The Fire yet to be placed in five starts, but well drawn here and capable of improving. Ain’tnolady resumes here and a forward showing is would not surprise. Marmel has not shown up in two starts but has trialed fairly recently. Royal Escapde just missed the pacings last start and well drawn here to be prominent.

Race Two: Carbineer back from slight setback, always hard to beat this company. Tidal Storm won two starts back but never likely last outing, and need to be at best. Titcherman yet to hit form this campaign but should be ready to produce best form. Lovely Lucy another who should be ready to show best after two moderate runs back. Brunelleschi fair effort first up and will strip fitter here. Master Marlon, pay to forget last run, and never faraway in this company. Punk’d in top form, goes up in class here though, but capable.

Race Three: Marshall Jensen produced good effort to win Mt Barker last start. Need to reproduce that run again. The Keillor Kid back in form with strong performances at last two. Look Here Trousers yet to how best this season and hard to follow, but drops a grade here. Stockman’s Dream faded last start with big weight, good effort at previous run. Cummings mixing form but best runs have been at this track.

Race Four: Impressive Johnson set a big task here first up at the distance. Sir Clase looked flat at second run back. Great record this distance and Jockey. Attadale placed in lesser company last start and untried this trip. Timely Reign was an easy winner last outing, placed all starts this distance. I’m A Rocker is race hard but moderate form last few. Movie World pay to forget last run in City, good record this trip but up in class. Ruberian suited the trip but struggling for form.

Race Five: Saramento knocking on the door with two good efforts back from spell, down in class up in weight. Spitfighter struggling for best form, anywhere near it would have claims here. Blazing Icon placed at two runs back, every chance last start. Honest but does not win many. All Spots not far away last few runs, and looks well placed here. Commandeer close up at last two starts and a win would not surprise. Magic Of Silver goes quick and good record at this distance. Myth N Mystery easy winner in moderate company, rises in class here. Tangram yet to reach best form this season, better suited this track.

Race Six: Sir Onan got home well last start to just miss, has big weight but suited here. Royalistic easy winner last outing and will handle extra 200m. Racso faded last start after fair second up effort. Has not won for sometime. Trochee fair effort when placed at 1600m last start, suited here. On The Double good winner at Mt Barker then fair effort at Bunbury. Yet to be placed this track. Canny Besain not sighted last few and improvement required. Carrellen Steel solid efforts since winning three starts back. Jarnac good effort at second race start but this a rise in class. Megablitz solid efforts at two runs back and will be suited this journey. St Peregrine placed at 1900m last start and race hard for this.

Race Seven: Jazzy Saint 1500m Maiden winner second up, this not much stronger. Chaddie not far away at last two and drops in class here. Pulashaky eight placings in 30 starts, and claims again here. Lauries Dream struggled last start, may go better ridden off the pace. Disco Reveller not much luck at last two runs and though drawn wide can surprise. Mctease placed in moderate company last start and this trip will suit. Heedvede has had plenty of chances, two starts back close up behind smart Meltdown Bunbury Maiden. Jordi game effort last start in stronger company. Need to reproduce that run.

Ladders Tables & Strike Rates

With just over a third of meetings for the season completed, Shaun Meeres has taken the lead in the Seasonal Jockeys award. When it comes to strike rates Peter Hall has ridden five winners from only twelve rides, and also heads the overall placing strike rates ahead of Russell Stewart who has ridden six placegetters in his nine rides back, but just cannot get that elusive winner over the line.

Steve Wolfe already looks to have the trainers award wrapped up with a big lead . With a winner in every four starters he also is well up in the Winning strike rates where Allen Mcnamara and Mark Nelson head the table from limited starters. Overall placings see Mcnamara lead from Gerry Hughes.

Esperance Review Saturday January 2nd

The Ray’s Contracting Handicap kicked things off at the Esperance Bay Turf Club on Saturday afternoon. It was the first 1600m event of the season and Brendan Corver’s talented mare Just Sue reigned supreme. She was ridden patiently by apprentice Andrew Castle but proved too powerful in the home straight. The win notched a hat-trick of triumphs and she has now won five of nine at the Esperance circuit. Topweight Key’s Ace under 58kg battled on well to be the runner up and pace-maker Masters Seal held on for third. Our Calendar Girl and Lady Berthe both failed to impress.

Race Two was the Express Yourself Printing Handicap (over 1600m) and newcomer The Gift was the winner at $18.50 on tote. Prepared locally by Sally Roworth the seven year old was a strong winner at his Esperance debut. Publicans Horse rattled home to be beaten half a length for Derek Jones and Nicole Hopwood while the punter’s elect Cut And Dried salvaged third position after drifting a long way back. The winner’s time was a slow 1.37.47.

The third was a 1300m Maiden sponsored by Powerplant Motorcycles. Hackett’s Heart, a four year old son of Helenus hadn’t raced since a tenth at Kalgoorlie in September but unleashed a mighty finish to break his Maiden status for Brendan Corver and Willie Arnold. He was backed late on tote and defeated stablemate Royal Wing by a neck. Favourite Outside Influence could only manage a third after looking the goods at the top of the straight.

Race Four was sponsored by the West River Thoroughbred Stud and it provided local trainer Sally Roworth with another triumph. Arcade Attraction was well ridden by three-kilo claiming apprentice Kevin Bohorun and held off a late challenge from grey mare Western Crown. Danger Man filled third ahead of the disappointing favourite Moss Street. Fizzy Kel caught the eye with a fast finishing fifth.

The feature was the Esperance Suzuki Sprint (1400m) and the Tracey Frizzell trained King Of The Stalls brought up his second win of the season. He’s Smokin’ set the speed but was conquered just a metre from the winning post after apprentice Talia Maor produced the winner with just 200m to travel. Grasa Express was entitled to drop out after looking to struggle on straightening but he battled on well to finish third.

A fast tempo was set in the Esperance Sheet Metal and Condingup Wreckers Handicap. It was so fast that three horses who were in rearward positions at the 500m mark filled the placings. Mr Magnificent, after 5 consecutive minor placings won by a nose over the fast finishing Twice The Speed. Cyclonic Force straightened in last position before sprouting wings to grab third spot. The mare was an outsider and added value to the dividends, ballooning the Trifecta dividend to over $4,600.

It was great to see six different riders taste success on the day. The next meeting scheduled will be in the ‘twilight’ timeslot on Friday January 15 with the first event set down for approximately 3pm. Horses to follow ; Key’s Ace, Publicans Horse, Hackett’s Heart, Fizzy Kel, Danish Currency and Cyclonic Force. Ryan Levitzke

Esperance Preview Saturday January 2

Once again thoroughbred racing action takes place this Saturday at the Esperance Bay Turf Club. The six race card commences at 2:07pm and once again will be covered by the WA TAB. The feature event of the afternoon will be Race Five, the $8,500 Esperance Suzuki Sprint over 1400m.

The opening race is the Ray’s Contracting Handicap over 1600m. Just Sue is shooting for a hat-trick of wins after surging home to win her last couple for leading trainer Brendan Corver. She was brilliant on Boxing Day when a steady tempo was set out in front but she still proved too strong at the finish. The extra distance will help her and she has built up an impeccable record at the Esperance track. Stablemate Lady Berthe will be running on and topweight Key’s Ace brings plenty of class to the table. Promising Israeli born jockey Talia Maor takes the ride and if the eight year old can handle the impost he should go close. Our Calendar Girl, Masters Seal, Interrogator and Majestic Range are also in with cheeky each way chances.

The Express Yourself Printing Handicap (1600m) looks to be primarily between recent maiden winner Brave Critic, and last start runner ups Cut And Dried and Irish Target. Publicans Horse and Snow Minx were just behind the placegetters at their latest runs too and could be improvers.

The first leg of the Quadrella is the Powerplant Motorcycles Maiden over 1300m. Outside Influence looms as the hardest to hold out after finishing second at her two Esperance starts to date. Royal Wing ran home stylishly last start and newcomers Hackett’s Heart, Over The Nova and End Of Fashion are all unknown quantities. This looks like Outside Influence’s race but you never know given that it’s a Maiden.

The West River Thoroughbred Handicap looks fairly open as far as winning chances go. Moss Street was very impressive last start for Rod Kirkup and the likes of Fizzy Kel, Danger Man, Innocent Bystander and Western Crown have all performed well at the track in the past. Landmark Lady also offers value from barrier one.

The Esperance Suzuki Sprint (1400m) sees the clash of He’s Smokin’, King Of The Stalls and Burnzy. Burnzy won the Open Sprint on Boxing Day but has drawn the outside gate in a field of seven. Danish Currency and Dancing Granada are both open to improvement but the main chances look to be numbers 1, 2 and 3.

The meeting concludes at 5:23pm with the running of the Esperance Sheet Metal and Condingup Wreckers Handicap. Good luck finding the winner in this. San Supremo and The Key Cutter are both impressive last start winners and Damon’s Halo, Mr Magnificent and Stormy Quest have all been ultra impressive without winning. Miss Alonso and Marvon Sher both ran second last start and Twice The Speed hasn’t been far away. When calculating a Quaddie it would be wise to take plenty of horses in this leg.

Early tips ; Just Sue, Irish Target, Outside Influence, Moss Street, Burnzy and San Supremo.

Mt Barker Review 31st December

Jockey Shaun Meeres had a red letter day riding a double on Trimconnection and Star Buck for Wagin trainer Angela Smith, as well as three seconds from seven mounts.

Marshall Jensen (Yannick Valenti) Photo courtesy www.grassrootsracingwa.com

Race One: The Rob Witten trained Troubled Smile blew his four opponents away with a very easy win over Billyaintsilly who battled away well with Zoom Star plodding into third spot, but never looking a winning chance. Port Regis was a fair effort first up, whilst Jolanta Star continues to struggle to regain form.

Race Two: Watson's Bay kept his Mt Barker win record at 100% with an easy win over Week Bix and Western Zed who led.

Race Three: Apprentice Yannick Valenti only had the one mount and made it a one for one with a good ride to bring Marshall Jensen down the outside to win from a fast finishing Pwakkers Back and Blazing Icon. Speedy Bohemian led and just missed the placings.

Race Four: Elleofgale blew most punters out of the Quaddie after racing wide and fighting on strongly to just beat Hussonace who again ran a nice race. Rivotio caught the eye running on strongly to just grab Dinglish for third. Both La Mia Dorabella and Harmony Card both ran improved races finishing just behind the placegetters. Favourite Grandblurr was under pressure before the turn and finished well back, but will come back a good prospect next preparation.

Race Five: Speedy galloper Alms went straight to the front and led all the way to win well from Rambler who had every chance. Jolanta Sky at her debut ran a very good third and with more race experience looks to set to become a promising type.

Race Six: Ridgewood Manna who goes well for Jockey Shaun McGruddy had this race won everywhere but on the post when Trimconnection got up, after taking an eternity to reel Ridgewood Manna in. City Of Subiaco finished on well to just get third ahead of Whittingham who was a good run first up. The Hunter trained fancied duo Daintys Fury and Stockmans Dream both missed the place, but were not suited under the weight conditions.

Race Eight: Star Buck with Shaun Meeres getting the second leg of his double up, used the cutaway to his advantage and came away to win comfortbaly over Washington Avenue and the Keillor Kid who ran on strongly again. King's Tribute was close up and is looking for more ground.
